Learn How To Build A Solar Panel
|
A solar panel is a photovoltaic panel, or
"solar cell" that is grouped together to form a
source of solar electricity to power homes and
businesses.
The solar cells turn sunlight into
electricity and is an extremely cost effective
way to manage power bills. Though there are
professional installers, it's in anyone's best
interest to learn how to build a solar
panel.
The solar cells can be expensive, and in
order to build a panel numerous cells are
required, sometimes costing around $5,000 or
more to power a single home.

However, after a home is powered with solar cells, it pays
itself off and the owner will never need to pay an electric
bill again as long as the solar panels are installed.
Photovoltaic ("PV) panels can be found either brand new or
on Ebay. Sometimes blemished PV panels are sold there at a
fraction of the price. If you're starting out with a do it
yourself solar panel project, it's advised you get a manual on
how to build them. These can be found online and in
bookstores.
If you're building a solar panel to go outside the home
(there are also smaller indoor panels that can be attached to
windows) you'll need double paned insulated glass. Outside
panels will create more heat and will be bigger. Window glass
is the best kind to protect the panel from the elements.
Regular glass is much too fragile so look for windows you can
build the panel into, or plexiglass.
Once you buy your panels, you'll then need to build a frame
to hold the panel. You can use plain plywood, or cover it in
metal. It can be painted to match the house. You'll have to
measure out dimensions to make sure the panel will fit into the
frame.
You'll need insulation and a heat absorption plate to go
into the panel. Anything that conducts heat well will work,
such as aluminum or copper, nickel and black chrome. These vary
in price range. The cells will need to be connected by copper
wire and then sealed with silicone.
A major component of solar panels is the battery. This is
powered by the solar panels and is where the electricity is
stored. The battery will supply power while there are long
periods of no sun such as at night or on very cloudy days.
It's best to start off small while you learn the ins and
outs of solar paneling before you attempt a large, rooftop
project. Solar panel installers have gone through rigorous
training and have various licenses in order to professionally
install solar paneling. But even if you aren't a professional
with patience, knowledge and skill you can build a solar panel
yourself.
Once you've gotten a manual and the proper components
together, you're ready to build a solar panel. Reference the
internet for outside sources and help. Through trial and error
you'll gain knowledge on the subject, but it can also be
pricey, so be sure to read up and know exactly what you're
doing before you begin the project.
