How To Complete Solar Panel Installation

As we all help to limit our impact on the environment, and save a bit of cash, it is well worth looking at other ways to produce energy for the home. One way you can manage this is through solar panel installation. However, before venturing on such a task for yourself; it is worth bearing a few points in mind.

Ahead of anything else, it is important that you have the right equipment for the solar panel installation; other than the panels themselves, you will also need: solar panel mounts and conduit; 3/8-inch steel bolts; metal rails; stainless steel lag bolts; a drill and pilot drill bit; a roll of twine or, better still a laser sight; and a stud finder.

When selecting the mounts, it is important to get the right ones for where you intend to mount them and for the type of panel used. Having got this arranged, locate the position on the rafters of your roof with your stud finder. These will support them once installed.

Mark out the place where you intend to place the panels with your twine or, for a more accurate measure, a laser sight. This will ensure you have given enough space for each panel, and do not have to jig things around later.

Taking your drill with the pilot bit attached, pre-drill the holes for the mounts. The pilot bit will prevent any erroneous damage to your rafters as you drill. Taking the mounts, drill and firmly secure them to the roof; using the lag bolts to safely hold them in place. Next, attach the rails to the mounts with the 3/8-inch bolts.

Once you are happy everything is secure, the actual solar panel installation can be done. Ensure these are positioned well into the rails; checking, checking, and checking again! Having made sure they are safe, you can attach the conduit and run this into the converter in your house. Be sure this too is secured well; in order it will stay fixed through the most inclement of weathers.

Whilst the process for solar panel installation is relatively straight forward, it is always worth consulting or seeking help from a professional. They can advise which systems will be most appropriate of course; but will also help with positioning to get the maximum sunlight and reduce obstructions.

Before starting the job; ensure you have notified your local electricity provider. It is likely they will have certain requirements you need to fulfill, and could send a technician to help. There is also a chance that you could be offered to opportunity to sell some of your power back to them!

You may also require a special permit from your state for completion of such works, and there may be a need to complete an energy resource audit. If in doubt; ask the question. It will save a whole lot of hassle and possibly money later on.

Solar panel installation is one of many great ways forward to help cut your bills, and help the planet. However, rooftop work is obviously dangerous, so such a job should be completed with a friend, to ensure safety.
